Moving houses can be an extremely chaotic, time-consuming experience to say the least. Usually, we’re worried about moving the furniture and switching our cable providers. So, what else is there left to do? You need to let the IRS know that you moved houses and complete an IRS change of address form.
First of all, the IRS waits for no one. If you miss an IRS notice, you will not be given a grace period. Missed notices can often result in expensive late fees or penalties. You should file as soon as your primary address has changed to avoid any late charges. This post will guide you through the very simple process of changing your address with the IRS. In addition to the official form, there are other ways to change your address with the IRS.
1. Use Your New Address On Your Tax Return
In this day and age, we’re always looking for efficient ways to get the job done. That’s why we recommend this first option. Simply, list your new address on your tax return. As you file your return, look for a box by the address field that you can check, indicating that it’s a change of address. This address will be used for all communications going forward. If you’re looking for a different option, the next best thing is to complete an IRS change of address form.
2. IRS Change of Address Form
Got a while until your tax return is due? Then this is the perfect option for you. If your address changes and your tax return is due a little further down the line, you should complete an IRS change of address form instead.
It’s easy. Form 8822 (or 8822-B for businesses) is available at the IRS website at these links. The form is pretty straightforward; it only asks for your social security number, the full names of those it applies to and the new address. Then all you have to do is mail it in.

3. What About the FTB?
The FTB (Franchise Tax Board) has a separate change of address form from the IRS. If you are a California resident, there are a few options for changing your address online. You can either go through your FTB online account or you can file Form 3533. For a business change of address, use Form 3533-B. If you make estimated tax payments by mail, you can notify the FTB of your new address by using it on your 540-ES voucher. No special forms or checkboxes needed!
Changing your address with the various tax organizations doesn’t have to be a difficult process, especially if you follow any of these easy recommendations. If you just moved, you’ll want to change your address sooner rather than later to avoid the trouble of missed notices and penalties.
