On January 10th, the IRS has granted emergency relief for all taxpayers in various counties in California affected by the storms and extended the due date to file and pay tax until May 15, 2023.
This includes individual and business tax returns due in this timeframe. We wanted to let you know immediately in case you had payments due 1/17/2023 that you would wish to postpone paying and you may do this without occurring additional penalties.
This relief has only been posted by IRS as of January 10th – normally CA FTB and other states will follow suit but we will need to confirm this. For your returns due normally in April (now due in May), we will continue to update here with details.
The California storm tax relief includes:
- Individuals and businesses will have until May 15, 2023, to file returns
- Individuals and businesses will have until May 15, 2023 to pay any taxes that were originally due during this period
- 2022 individual income tax returns due on April 18
- Various 2022 business returns normally due on March 15 and April 18
- Eligible taxpayers will also have until May 15 to make 2022 contributions to their IRAs and health savings accounts
- 45 day and 180 day due dates of 1031 transactions where relinquished property was transferred on or before 1/8/23
